Local Fishing Report - March 28

Local Fishing Report - March 28

Autumn fishing is in full swing with a variety of seasonal fish coming on the chew. The calmer weather and warm water has turned on the big kingfish, bonito and sharks. As we transition to the winter season cooler species like big squid and luderick are showing up in big numbers.

Southwest Rocks

The Ocean is cleaning up a little every day after recent floods from cyclone Alfred. Ocean temperatures are around 26c and the tropical visitors are in feed mode!  Wahoo, Mackeral, Longtail and Cobia all responding well to live baits.

The river is still dirty even after 3 weeks since the rain event. With that being said big flathead and mulloway are still on the chew!

Sydney Harbour

Inshore - The warm water has really turned the kingfish on with plenty of fish being caught on a range of baits and lures with some fish being over one metre coming aboard! In amongst the kingfish there have been some big bonito being caught on both lures and baits.

If you're looking for a feed of squid or need quality bait the harbour has also been producing BIG squid. These tasty critters have been found in and around the kelp beds and also in the deeper parts of the harbour. Size 3 to 3.5 yamashita squid jigs with a rattle seem to be doing the damage.

Pittwater, Broken Bay and surrounds

Sydney fishing has been very patchy again this week with one day producing some nice surface action from Mack tuna and frigate mackerel and the next day seems switched off.

Kingfish are spread thin but persistence and some willingness to fish less popular locations has paid off. Some good size fish up to 10-12kg have been encountered but have won their freedom.

The Hawkesbury has been producing good numbers of jewfish around the usual spots like Juno Point and Flint and Steel. Fishing the slack tide with fresh butterfly fish baits and squid strips have been working well although many of the fish aren't quite the legal 70cm size but still good fun!

Rock and Beach

With the water temps reaching 23 to 24 degrees off the local beaches it's safe to say the water is warm! With the warm water comes sharks. Almost every beach is producing sharks and these fish aren't fussy either taking fish baits, live baits and squid. Find a deep gutter, cast out decent size bait with a couple of 7/0 hooks and it wont take long for a bite. Most of the sharks caught are dusky whalers which are great fun to catch. Especially for the kids! Nothing better than heading to school to tell the class they caught a shark! They can be eaten as they don't taste too bad if looked after properly but it's best to take a quick snap and let it swim again.

There haven't been many reports of jewfish being caught the past week or so however, Sydney's due for a drenching on Saturday which will churn up the beaches that may see some jewfish being caught.

The rocks have been producing good numbers of luderick on weed baits and bonito are still lurking in the early mornings taking a variety of metal lures and jigs.

A reminder - Always check the weather report before fishing the ocean rocks and stay safe. All beaches in the Northern Beaches are required to wear a lifejacket when fishing.
